ROS 2 Workshop: Implementing and Optimizing Factory Automation

ROS 2 Workshop: Implementing and Optimizing Factory Automation

Course modified date: 21 August 2026
  • Length: 8h
  • Content Type: Project
  • Programming: ROS2

The Challenge

You'll step into the shoes of robotics integrators working for a pharmaceutical company in Basel. Your mission: automate a factory line that sorts and packages chemical products in vials.

The factory has two critical production lines:

  1. Quality Check Line - Sort vials by color (safe vs. unsafe) using computer vision
  2. Packaging Line - Pack approved vials into boxes for shipment to pharmacies worldwide

The Story

A pharmaceutical company based in Basel recruited two interns to automate their factory production line with Niryo Ned3 Pro robots. The factory needs to sort chemical products in vials between safe and unsafe categories (classified by color) and pack them into boxes for shipment to pharmacies worldwide.

Your Mission

In this workshop, you'll step into the role of these interns by reading their detailed reports and following their implementation journey.

The Workshop Flow:

  1. Reproduce the "intern Solution" - Follow the interns' reports to recreate their working but imperfect implementations
  2. Read the Feedback - Study the professor's and Niryo team's comments on how to improve the solutions
  3. Enhance the System - Apply the suggested improvements to meet the company's performance requirements
  4. Bonus Challenges - Go beyond the feedback and add your own creative optimizations

Meet the Interns

Two students worked on this project, each tackling a different part of the production line. Choose your path based on what you want to learn!

Workshop Structure

  1. Setup - Configure your environment and connect to hardware
  2. Reproduce the intern Solution - Follow intern reports to build a working system
  3. Analyze & Improve - Apply professor feedback to optimize performance
  4. Bonus Challenges (optional) - Add your own improvements and exceed requirements
